Question 101 · Miracles of Jesus

Why are the miracles of Jesus essential to His ministry?

Biblical Background

Jesus’ miracles authenticate His identity as the Messiah and Son of God, revealing divine authority over nature, sickness, demons, and death. John calls them “signs” meant to inspire belief (John 20:30–31). They show that God’s kingdom is breaking into history through Jesus’ presence and power.

Historical Context

Miracle-working was known in Judaism, but Jesus’ miracles stood apart for their authority, compassion, and theological depth. They were never performed for spectacle but to reveal God’s character and accomplish God’s redemptive purposes.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ miracles demonstrate His divinity, compassion, and mission. They reveal Him as Creator in human flesh, reversing the curse and restoring creation. Miracles embody the gospel—God healing the broken, liberating the oppressed, and bringing life where there was death.
