Why did Jesus perform miracles?
Biblical Background
Jesus’ miracles served as signs revealing His identity as the Messiah and Son of God. John explicitly states that the miracles were written “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ” (John 20:30–31). Miracles demonstrated divine authority over sickness, nature, demons, and death, and authenticated His proclamation of the Kingdom of God (Matthew 12:28).
Historical Context
Jesus' reputation as a miracle worker is widely attested. Even non-Christian sources such as Josephus refer to Him as a doer of “startling deeds.” Unlike magicians of the ancient world, Jesus never performed miracles for profit or spectacle; they were rooted in compassion and mission.
Theological Meaning
Miracles reveal God’s character—His compassion, holiness, and sovereignty. They are glimpses of the restored creation that God promises, showing that the Kingdom brings healing, deliverance, and renewal. Miracles are not interruptions of natural laws but expressions of divine authority over creation.
