Question 141 · Jesus & the Old Testament

How does the Old Testament predict the coming of Jesus as the Messiah?

Biblical Background

The Old Testament contains numerous prophetic themes pointing toward a coming Messiah—God’s anointed King—who would save and restore Israel. These include promises of a descendant of David who would reign forever (2 Samuel 7:12–16; Psalm 89), a prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15–19), and a suffering servant who would bear sin (Isaiah 53). Jesus’ life, ministry, death, and resurrection are presented in the New Testament as the fulfillment of these long-awaited expectations.

Historical Context

Jewish people living during the Second Temple period anticipated different types of Messiahs—royal, priestly, prophetic, or apocalyptic deliverers. Jesus fulfilled and transcended these expectations in ways that surprised many. His identification with prophetic and priestly roles, coupled with His sacrificial death and resurrection, reshaped the Jewish understanding of Messiahship.

Theological Meaning

Jesus is the climax of God’s redemptive plan. The Old Testament lays the foundation for His identity and mission, and the New Testament reveals Him as the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises. Through Jesus, the Scriptures find coherence and completion.
