Question 147 · Jesus & the Old Testament

How does the prophetic theme of the new covenant point to Jesus?

Biblical Background

Jeremiah 31:31–34 promises a new covenant in which God will write His law on hearts, forgive sins, and form an intimate relationship with His people. Jesus explicitly ties His death to this new covenant when He says, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20).

Historical Context

Jews longed for a renewed covenant because the old one had been broken repeatedly. The new covenant promised transformation, not merely external law-keeping.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ sacrificial death inaugurates this new covenant, granting believers forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. He is the mediator of the better covenant (Hebrews 8:6), fulfilling the prophetic hope of inward transformation and restored relationship with God.
