Question 155 · Salvation

How does Jesus save people from their sins?

Biblical Background

Jesus saves by forgiving sin, removing guilt, breaking sin’s power, and offering new life. He bears the sins of the world (John 1:29), fulfills the sacrificial system (Hebrews 10), and grants forgiveness through His authority (Mark 2:5–12).

Historical Context

Sin was understood as bondage, guilt, impurity, and rebellion. Jesus addresses all aspects of sin through His teaching, healing, death, and resurrection.

Theological Meaning

Salvation involves justification (declared righteous), sanctification (transformed in holiness), and adoption (made children of God). Jesus saves not only from the penalty of sin but also from its power and, ultimately, its presence. Salvation is holistic, restoring relationship with God and renewing the whole person.
