Question 183 · Christian Life

Why did Jesus use parables in His teaching?

Biblical Background

Jesus teaches in parables both to reveal truth to receptive hearts and to conceal it from the hardened (Mark 4:11–12). Parables invite reflection and require spiritual insight. They are earthly stories with heavenly meanings, crafted to provoke repentance and deeper understanding of God’s kingdom.

Historical Context

Parables were common in Jewish teaching, but Jesus’ use of them was unparalleled in creativity and depth. His stories—such as the Good Samaritan and Prodigal Son—employed familiar imagery from daily life, yet conveyed profound spiritual realities.

Theological Meaning

Parables expose the listener’s heart. They reveal who is open to God’s truth and who resists it. Through parables, Jesus unveils the nature of God’s grace, the demands of discipleship, and the mystery of the kingdom. They remain central in Christian spiritual formation.
