Question 192 · Trinity

How does Jesus relate uniquely to God the Father?

Biblical Background

Jesus calls God “My Father,” revealing a unique, eternal relationship. He teaches that the Father has given Him all authority and that He shares in the Father’s glory (John 5:19–23; John 17). Jesus is the only begotten Son, distinct from all who become children of God through adoption.

Historical Context

Jesus’ claims shocked His contemporaries because He spoke of the Father with intimate familiarity. Early Christians affirmed Jesus’ divine Sonship in baptismal creeds and confessions.

Theological Meaning

Jesus is eternally begotten of the Father—not created—sharing the same divine nature. He perfectly reveals the Father, carries out His will, and invites believers into this divine relationship through grace. Jesus’ Sonship is the foundation for Christian understanding of God as Father.
