Question 22 · Death & Resurrection

What were the main charges brought against Jesus at His trial?

Biblical Background

Jesus was accused of blasphemy by Jewish leaders for claiming divine authority and equality with God (Mark 14:61–64). Before Pilate, He was charged with sedition—claiming to be “King of the Jews,” which threatened Roman political stability (Luke 23:2). These charges reflect both theological offense and political fear.

Historical Context

Trials in first-century Judea blended religious and political concerns. Jesus’ popularity, Temple actions, and messianic claims alarmed authorities who feared unrest and Roman retaliation. The Gospels and non-Christian sources agree that Jesus was executed under Pilate during Passover.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ trial fulfills prophecy and reveals humanity’s rejection of God’s Messiah. Though innocent, He willingly submits to unjust judgment to accomplish salvation. His trial exposes human sinfulness and divine sovereignty working through human evil to bring redemption.
