Question 57 · Teachings & Ethics

What did Jesus teach about judgment and mercy?

Biblical Background

Jesus warns against hypocritical judgment - "Do not judge, or you too will be judged" (Matthew 7:1-5). He calls His followers to examine themselves before correcting others and to extend the mercy they have received from God. Yet Jesus also affirms the need for discernment, urging His disciples to judge rightly (John 7:24).

Historical Context

Religious leaders often judged others based on external behavior and purity laws. Jesus confronted these tendencies, emphasizing justice, mercy, and faithfulness over legalistic scrutiny.

Theological Meaning

Judgment belongs ultimately to God. Believers are called to uphold truth while embodying compassion. Mercy triumphs over judgment because it reflects God's gracious character. Jesus teaches that forgiven people must become forgiving people, demonstrating the gospel through their treatment of others.
