Question 6 · Birth & Early Life

Why did the Holy Family flee to Egypt?

Biblical Background

Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s massacre of infants (Matthew 2:13–18). This event fulfills Hosea 11:1—“Out of Egypt I called my son”—connecting Jesus to Israel’s story. Like Israel, Jesus emerges from Egypt, symbolizing a new exodus and deliverance.

Historical Context

Egypt had a large Jewish population and was a common refuge for those fleeing political danger. The journey would have been difficult and dangerous, showing the real human vulnerability of the Holy Family.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ descent into Egypt reveals Him as the true Israel, reliving and fulfilling the nation’s history. The flight underscores God’s sovereignty in protecting His Messiah and highlights the clash between earthly rulers and God’s kingdom. It also emphasizes that Christ identifies with refugees and the oppressed.
