Question 66 · Historical Jesus

What did Jesus look like from a historical perspective?

The Bible does not describe Jesus’ physical appearance, and early Christians avoided depicting Him literally. Historically, as a first-century Jewish man from Galilee, Jesus likely had olive-brown skin, dark hair, and brown eyes. Archaeological and forensic studies of Jewish remains from the period suggest an average height of around 5'5" (165 cm), with a strong, lean build typical of manual laborers.

Unlike later artistic portrayals showing European features, Jesus would have looked like other Middle Eastern Jews of His time. His clothing likely consisted of simple wool garments, a mantle (cloak), and sandals. Isaiah’s description of the Suffering Servant—“no beauty that we should desire Him” (Isaiah 53:2)—may suggest an ordinary appearance, though this is poetic imagery.

Historically grounded reconstructions remind us that Jesus was fully embedded in His cultural and ethnic context, challenging modern stereotypes or idealized images.
