Question 97 · Kingdom of God

Why did Jesus teach that the Kingdom is both present and future?

Biblical Background

Jesus announces that the Kingdom is already at work in His ministry (Luke 11:20) yet teaches His disciples to pray for its future arrival (“Your kingdom come”). The present Kingdom is spiritual, healing, and transformative; the future Kingdom will be physical, universal, and eternal.

Historical Context

This tension addressed Jewish hopes for immediate national liberation. Jesus revealed a more profound fulfillment that unfolds in stages—first in hearts, later in the whole world.

Theological Meaning

The “already/not yet” nature of the Kingdom shows that salvation is both received now and awaited fully. Believers experience forgiveness, the Spirit, and transformation today while longing for Christ’s return and the renewal of creation.
