Question 16 · Identity of Jesus
What does Christian theology teach about Jesus’ atoning death?
Biblical Background
Jesus’ death is portrayed as substitutionary—He dies in place of sinners (Isaiah 53; 1 Peter 2:24). Jesus describes His death as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) and the new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:20).
Historical Context
Atonement has been central to Christian belief. Early Christians understood Jesus’ crucifixion not as defeat but as victory over sin, death, and the devil.
Theological Meaning
Jesus’ death accomplishes reconciliation, justification, redemption, and forgiveness. It satisfies God’s justice and manifests His love. Through the atonement, human beings are restored to right relationship with God. The cross is the heart of Christian theology because it reveals God’s holiness, mercy, and triumphant love.
