Question 17 · Identity of Jesus

How do Christians understand Jesus’ resurrection?

Biblical Background

The resurrection is the historical and supernatural event in which Jesus rose bodily from the dead on the third day. It validates His identity as the Son of God and fulfills prophecy (Psalm 16:10; Luke 24:44–46).

Historical Context

The resurrection transformed the disciples from fearful fugitives into bold witnesses willing to die for their testimony. Early creeds (e.g., 1 Corinthians 15) affirm the resurrection as central to Christian faith.

Theological Meaning

The resurrection is God’s victory over sin and death. It inaugurates new creation, guarantees believers’ future resurrection, and affirms Jesus’ lordship. Without the resurrection, Christian faith would be empty—but with it, salvation is assured and the gospel stands firm.
