Question 37 · Discipleship & Mission

Why did the disciples often misunderstand Jesus?

Biblical Background

The Gospels frequently show the disciples confused or slow to understand Jesus’ teachings (Mark 8:14–21). Their expectations of a political Messiah clashed with Jesus’ mission of sacrificial love and spiritual renewal. Only after the resurrection and the coming of the Spirit did they fully grasp His identity and mission.

Historical Context

Jewish Messianic expectations were varied, but many anticipated national liberation from Rome. Jesus’ focus on suffering, humility, and spiritual transformation did not align with dominant expectations.

Theological Meaning

Their misunderstandings reveal the limits of human perception and the need for divine illumination. True understanding comes through the Holy Spirit, who guides believers into truth (John 16:13). The disciples’ struggles reassure believers today that growth in faith is a gradual process shaped by God’s patient teaching.
