Question 39 · Discipleship & Mission

How did Jesus prepare the disciples for His departure?

Biblical Background

Jesus prepares His disciples through extended teaching (John 13–17), promising the Holy Spirit as Helper, Teacher, and Advocate. He assures them of His ongoing presence, even as He prepares them for persecution, mission, and spiritual responsibility.

Historical Context

Ancient rabbis passed on teachings before death, but Jesus’ instruction surpassed this by promising divine empowerment. Pentecost confirmed His words, enabling the disciples to continue His mission with boldness.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ preparation demonstrates that discipleship continues beyond His earthly ministry. The Holy Spirit enables Christians to do His works, preserves His teachings, and guides the church. Jesus equips His followers with everything necessary to live faithfully in His absence while awaiting His return.
