Why is Jesus called the 'Word' (Logos)?
Biblical Background
John 1:1–3 identifies Jesus as the eternal Word (Logos), through whom all things were created. The Logos concept conveys that Jesus is the ultimate self-expression of God—the one who reveals God’s mind, will, and character. When “the Word became flesh,” God entered human history to make Himself known (John 1:14).
Historical Context
The term Logos resonated with both Jewish and Greek audiences. Jewish wisdom literature spoke of God’s Word creating and sustaining the world. Greek philosophers saw the Logos as the rational order behind the universe. John uses the term to proclaim that the divine principle they sought is a person—Jesus Christ.
Theological Meaning
The Logos affirms Jesus’ divinity, preexistence, and role in revelation. He is not merely a messenger from God but God’s self-disclosure. Through Jesus, believers see and know the Father fully.
